Rukshana Hashi Sonia talks to the Bangladeshi actor and activist, Ilias Kanchan, about some of the problems facing Bangladesh, including traffic awareness and road safety.
Ilias Kanchan, born Idris Ali in 1956 in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, is a celebrated actor and social activist. He starred in over 350 films, gaining fame during the 1980s and 1990s for his remarkable contributions to Bangladeshi cinema.
Beyond acting, he is deeply admired for his activism. After his wife tragically passed away in a road accident in 1993, Ilias Kanchan founded Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Roads), a movement advocating for road safety. His efforts led to the recognition of 22 October as a National Road Safety Day in Bangladesh.
For his dedication to both the arts and social service, he has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2018. He remains an influential figure, inspiring change both on and off the screen.
